Holiday entitlement calculator
Almost all UK workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. Work out what that means for your working pattern.
Statutory holiday in the UK
Under the Working Time Regulations, almost all workers, including part-time, zero-hours and agency workers, are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. In days, that's capped at 28.
| Days worked a week | Minimum holiday |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5.6 days |
| 2 | 11.2 days |
| 3 | 16.8 days |
| 4 | 22.4 days |
| 5 or more | 28 days |
Irregular-hours and part-year workers
If your hours vary a lot, or you only work part of the year (such as term-time staff), holiday builds up at 12.07% of the hours you actually work in each pay period. The figure comes from 5.6 weeks ÷ 46.4 working weeks. Employers can also choose to pay rolled-up holiday pay of 12.07% on top of each payslip instead.
Holiday pay
For the first four weeks of holiday, pay must reflect your normal pay, including regular overtime, commission and bonuses. Your employer can't pay you instead of taking statutory holiday, except when you leave the job.
This calculator gives the legal minimum. Your contract may give you more. Northern Ireland has its own rules, which are broadly similar.
Frequently asked questions
How many days' holiday am I entitled to?
Someone working 5 days a week is entitled to at least 28 days of paid holiday a year (5.6 weeks × 5 days). This can include the 8 bank holidays in England and Wales. The statutory maximum is 28 days, even if you work 6 days a week.
How much holiday do part-time workers get?
Part-time workers get 5.6 weeks too, scaled to the days or hours they work. Someone working 3 days a week gets 5.6 × 3 = 16.8 days. Someone working 20 hours a week gets 5.6 × 20 = 112 hours.
What is the 12.07% holiday rule?
For leave years starting on or after 1 April 2024, irregular-hours and part-year workers build up holiday at 12.07% of the hours they work in each pay period. For example, working 100 hours in a month earns 12.07 hours of holiday.
Do bank holidays count as part of my holiday?
There's no legal right to paid bank holidays on top of the 5.6 weeks. Your employer can count them as part of your statutory entitlement. Check your contract, as many employers give more than the legal minimum.
How much holiday do I get if I start part way through the year?
In your first year you get a proportion of the full entitlement based on how much of the leave year is left. Starting halfway through means half the annual amount. Employers may round fractions up but can't round them down.
